Unifying the Jets in GRBs and AGNs

Author: Rodrigo Nemmen

Abstract: I will present the recent result - based on Swift and Fermi observations - that jets produced by active galactic nuclei (AGN) and GRBs seem to exhibit the same correlation between the kinetic power carried by accelerated particles and the gamma-ray luminosity, with AGN and GRBs lying at the low- and high-luminosity ends, respectively, of the correlation. This suggests that the efficiency of energy dissipation in jets produced in black hole systems is similar over 10 orders of magnitude in jet power, establishing a physical analogy between AGN and GRBs. I will discuss how this result can shed light on the potential physical links between jet production/dissipation in AGNs and GRBs.
